Space 2008 Issue 2: Building a Community of Writers

Don’t take me away…
Please.
It’s my only place
to forget the past,
and move on…
Just THAT place.
That SINGLE place.
That each and everyday,
creates a new
shining star,
and a silver turning point,
in my life.

-From My Shining Star, Giselle 8th Grade Maryland

The words unfold, the images stir, the ideas and thoughts and dreams of students across the United States pour onto the pages of Space 2008 Issue 2.

Please read and reflect on the writing of students from Lovett and these other schools, and leave your comments for them here on this post. You can reference their writing (title of work, author) and they will come read and comment back here.

  1. I went to this website and I read Simply Me by Jonathan P in Bronx, NY. I also read Where I am From by Genaro in Bronx, NY. I thought it was interesting to read other people’s poems who are around my age. These two poems that I read were very much like the I am From poems we wrote in English. Ours were a little bit longer, ours were six stanzas. We also have a blog in English where we post our writing. My blog address is http://gracies.learnerblogs.org/

  2. I read two poems, one was from Elizabeth from Bronx NY, this one was good, but wasn’t exactly well-written, but the point ut across and the things she described was still very good. The other poem I read was called Ending, this week. by Lindsea in 11th grade from Hawaii. THis poem i thought was scary, but interesting, it was well-written as well. I thought it was cool to read other peoples comments from around the country.

  3. I went to the website and read some poems from the other kids from around the world. Two of the poems I read were Simply, Me by Jonathan P who lives in Bronx, NY and Ending This Week by Lindsea who is in the 11th grade in Hawaii. These poems were a lot like the I Am From poems that we wrote but theirs were also different because they were shorter than ours and ours were more happy and there’s were kind of weird and sad but also funny.

  4. I read two peoms and they were both by Lindsea from Hawaii. I have say they were kind of weird. I did not understand the fetus part as well as the sphncter. Thsi was really weird and I admit it was a waste of thirty econds of my life. Overall your second peom I read was good and liked the rap you did. Keep up the good work.

  5. I read two poems, I Am, by Elizabeth from The Bronx, and Where I’m From, by Genaro, from The Bronx. Both poems were good. They were descriptive and described either the writer or their families. Overall I thought that both poems were very good.

  6. Hey, thanks for putting part of my poem in your website! I really like the website my english teacher created. I like it because different people from my school including me can post a bunch of awesome and unique poems. The great thing about that, is that everyone gets to see what people in my grade have worked on, and so i think that this opens up new windows for people who are interested in writing poems and other things too. What I think that students can benefit from the website is that they can get used to showing all of their creativity and they also can learn how to display the work that they have done by putting it on a website for everyone to see. Another reason why it is a great idea, is because people can post comments on student’s work, and leave feedback on the things that they make. People from all over the place will take part in the website and help students write better, and improve their skills by leaving comments and letting them know what to change in their work. So thanks again for putting my poem in your website!! I appreciate it. Thank ya. :)

  41. I read “This Mask” by Adelle and i loved this poem. It put such a good description in my head of how you can truly hide yourself with a mask on, and how people feel that they dont want to wear a mask, and they want to be accepted. I also liked how you said “i cant be whoever i want, i can only hide my thoughts” and i thought it was cool how you rhymed most of the time but sometimes it wasnt rhyming but the poem still sounded great.

  50. Hey!
I have been reading sooooo many poems, but the two that I thought were really good were Stereotypes by Patricia and This Mask by Adelle. I understand were Patricia was coming from! Why should we be given a title before anyone gets to know us? We may look like a jock, but could be really smart too. I really like this poem, good job Patricia!!!! Adelle, what a great poem! I really liked your poem too! It reminded me of Patricias poem. I liked the words that you used to describe your feelings, and I hope that you will continue to write these poems! Good Job Patricia and Adelle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    ~Megan

  51. I read Just to get this off my mind by Allyson from Maryland. I see where you are coming from and I agree with you. This doesn’t really happen to me but I have seen it done to other girls. This was a really good poem and I enjoyed it.

  52. I read This Mask by Adelle from Maryland. It was very different from any other poem I have ever read and I liked it. I understand how you feel because I sometimes feel like this as well. Keep on writing.

  53. I read the poem entitled “This Mask,” by Adelle from Maryland. While reading, I was amazed at how deep the meaning of the poem was, and how true the metaphor of the mask was for so many people in today’s world. I actually really liked the spacing of the poem as well. It only seemed to add to the intensity and truth of the metaphor, intensifying every line as I read on. However, I believe that the best part of the poem, however, was how easily it was to see that Adelle was writing from her own soul and experiences, and it just made the poem better! Keep up the great work, Adelle. I look forward to reading your future poems!

  54. I read the poem entitled “If You Cared,” by Giselle in Maryland. While reading it, I couldn’t believe the fluidity of it all! Her words and feelings seemed to flow out onto the page seamlessly as I read on. The poem itself was unbelievably descriptive, and I could truly tell that she meant every word of the poem. The poem was a refreshing glance at her feelings at an exact moment in time, and it takes a lot of effort to show that so well! Giselle, you are a great writer, and I can’t wait so see what you write later on in life!

  55. I read the poem “Where I’m From” by Genaro. I thought it was very good. I liked how you used “I am from” to describe yourself and your background. Great job!

  56. “This Mask” by Adelle, was a great poem i read. I really liked your poem, it was very interesting and also true, I think everyone wears a mask in his/her life. I really enjoyed reading it!

  57. I read two poems, “STEREOTYPES,” by Patricia in Maryland and “This Mask,” by Adelle in Maryland. First of all, I agree with everything you said, Patricia; we do not choose how we are labeled, people choose for us. Good work on the piece. Adelle, Your poem was really good. I liked the way you put your feelings down on paper and you did not hold back. I thought it was an honest piece of work. Keep it up.
