“The question before all educators is how and how quickly we change, not whether we’ll change.”-Pat Bassett

Last February NAIS president Pat Bassett challenged independent schools to change. Referencing work by Thomas Friedman, Mel Levine and Howard Gardner, Bassett outlined the need for revisioned schools and retooled students. Why? This new global knowledge-based economy and society requires more creative, collaborative, and networked people who can critically think and communicate innovative ideas. As Gardner writes in his book Five Minds for the Future, “[s]tudents may have accumulated plenty of factual or subject-matter knowledge; but they have not learned to think in a disciplined manner.”

Beginning in the 2007-08 school year and continuing in earnest this year, the Lovett middle school faculty is focusing on what a 21st century learning environment looks like and what outcomes we should expect from our students. As we develop a more ubiquitous computing environment and navigate a networked world of information abundance, we are examining what we teach, how we teach, and how we assess the work. What demonstrates learning? What is the role of the student? The teacher? Technology?

Check out the following video, produced by a small team of faculty along with Owen Matthews, Middle School Technology Coordinator, and Laura Deisley, Technology Consultant. Presented to a group of 20 leading independent schools in the Southeast-including Trinity, Westminster, Woodward, and Holy Innocents- the video demonstrates the hard work our faculty and students are doing to “understand the shift” and begin the process of learning to thrive in a highly networked culture.

Welcome to the Lovett Middle School blog! On these pages we are creating an online community that will support and extend our classroom walls to our homes and around the world! We encourage everyone-our students, parents, faculty, administrators, and friends-to join us on this learning adventure and be a part of the conversation!

In this main blog, we will offer new ideas, as well as onine tools and games; explore our evolving learning environment; highlight developing best practices and projects; and share the voices of students, faculty, and others who are transforming their learning by becoming more “connected.” And, most importantly, we hope to inspire one another to uncover our passions and share our gifts.

Benjamin Zander, an entertaining and highly accomplished conductor, believes we unlock learning when we practice the art of possibility. In the following TED talk, Zander shows us just what it means to have “shining eyes.” I hope you’ll take the time to listen to his entire presentation and then share with us (using the comment feature of this blog) what makes your eyes “shine.” I also wonder: How might you encourage someone else’s eyes to shine?

From kids playing on the yard,

I am from Waffle House and Chick-fil-A,
From Lady Liberty standing tall,
From dreams that must be fulfilled,
From the blazing heat in Ecuador,
And independence from conquistadors.

From soccer practice daily,
From dreaming to be on that stadium field,
And scoring the goal to keep the game sealed.

I am from rays of morning light glistening off of the walls and couches
From the quiet pitter-patter of animals on the hard, wooden floor
From the hypnotizing aroma of dinner wafting through the air
And the comforting heat of the new, glowing fire
I am from home - chaotic, comforting, and serene

I am from a beige castle hidden amongst the trees
From orchestras of birds and cicadas
From curving and cracking pavement
From a cold pool and a wet dog
And grass that never seems to grow

I am from endless skyscrapers and nonstop peaches
From lions of blue and white
From dusty roads and polo fields
From comfort food, a local addiction
And neighbors who stay closer than family

I am from fifty stars and thirteen stripes
From amber waves of grain
From Washington, and Jefferson, and Lincoln
From football and baseball, two true national pastimes
And equality and diversity through thick and thin

I am from the shores of Portugal and the shores of home
From the strong-minded and the strong-bodied
From the most independent and proud of people
From broad smiles and glasses half full
And where honesty is second to none

I hope for bright, careless mornings
From peace that will last and air that is clean
From justice for all, no matter the costs
From family and loyalty
And faith
I am from home.

Sometimes I want to soar like a silver tipped bird into a silky blue sky, singing with the soft sounds of the wind.

Echoes ring in my ears, the sweet sound of my destiny that is to follow.

I’d like to spread my wings to the farthest gates of the earth, pushing off this dry land in escape from this path I have taken too long.

I will wander into a land of bliss looking into the future for hope and contemplating my past mistakes, a haze that hangs in my eyes.

I will roam the skies with all my might and everything will flow seamlessly together.

I will fly to the beat of the wind and the birds will be my orchestra.

I will spread my wings into a canvas of time and become free.
